Roy Clinging

Roy is well known throughout the country as a fine exponent and interpreter of traditional songs and tunes. He has a wide range of songs and ballads at his fingertips and a rich repertoire of local (Cheshire) material to draw on. He has performed at venues all over the country and in the USA and had played most of the major UK Festivals including Sidmouth, Whitby, Broadstairs, Bromyard, Chippenham and Chester.

Accompanying himself on English concertina and acoustic guitar he has a wide repertoire of material drawn from an equally diverse array of sources. Traditional English songs, 19th century broadsides, Cheshire material, contemporary and self-penned pieces and a few lively dance tunes to balance the mix.

When This Old Hat Was New

The initial idea for this production was inspired by a collection of songs under the title of "Modern Street Ballads", compiled by John Ashton and published by Chatto and Windus in 1888. For a completely different show (about the development of the workhouse system) I was kindly lent a 19th century opera hat, and my thought processes linked it to an old broadside ballad called "When This Old Hat was New". I suddenly realised that many of these songs could well have been current when the old hat that I was now in possession of actually was new! The concept began to develop and "The Hat Show" was born.

An Honest Working Man

“Roy's timely follow-up to his 1999 Cheshire Born again presents a great choice of songs in interesting versions and exceedingly stylish performances vocally and concertinally (is there such a word? - if there isn't, then there is now!) from Roy himself. The principal difference is that whereas the earlier album concentrated on songs and tunes from Roy's native Cheshire, the new album contains a fair sprinkling of maritime material alongside unusual versions of classics of the ballad repertoire.”- David Kidman, The Living Tradition

". . . some of the best traditional music you will ever hear." - Folk North West

". . . performed with the skill & confidence of a craftsman." - Pete Coe

Cheshire Born

At various points in its long and colourful history Cheshire has been rightly regarded as an area of military, economic and agricultural importance, but at the same time its folk culture has not always received the attention that it necessarily deserves. In a modest attempt to address at least some of the balance, all of the material on this recording is either from or about people and places within the old county boundary and its collection has been, and still is, an interesting, if at times challenging, exercise. This recording was sponsored by the former Cheshire County Council.
